UCSBでの生活がなんとか始まり、住まいは、キャンパスの中のSan Rafaelという寮で過ごすことになりました。寮の中は、大きな４人部屋。大きな部屋の中に、２人ずつが住む小部屋が２つ、リビングルームとトイレ、シャワーは共同というつくりです。
私のルームメイトは、Jackという中国系アメリカ人。幼い頃をアフリカのルアンダで過ごしたという変わった経歴を持っています。もうひとつの部屋には、ノルウェー人とGyrdとメキシコ人のFrankというメンバーです。
日中それぞれがどんな勉強をしているのかは、ほとんど語り合うことはありませんでしたが、印象に残っているのは、JackとFrankが、時々コンピューター・センターから抱えて持って帰って来る大きく分厚い紙の束。コンピューターで何かのプログラムを書いて結果が印刷されている、という説明を聞いたように思いますが、コンピューターというのが何やら分からず。。。
思えば、この数年前にMicrosoftやAppleが出来、コンピューター時代がやっと始まろうとしていた時期。もっとコンピューターに関心を持っていたら、自分の生き方も変わっていたかも知れないと今では思います。しかし、そんなこともなく、９ヵ月をこのキャンパスで過ごすことになりました。
留学したものの、卒業を目標としない交換留学というしくみ。とにかく興味のわく科目を取ってみました。その中には、中国の近代史（中国人の先生が、分かりにくい中国語で教えてくれました）、アメリカ憲法、アメリカの選挙制度（日本の選挙制度もあまりりかいしていなかったのに）、英語、フランス語。
一番一生懸命やったのは、フランス語かな。この９ヵ月で、かなり会話力がつきました。
